- LEVEL3 - PerfumeFavorite Track(s):Spring of Life (Album-mix) / Dream Land
The choice everyone saw from a thousand miles away. Perfume’s newest album is a solid release that I keep in my car at all times. Not much to say aside from the fact that everyone needs this fucking album in their life. It’s a religious experience.
- II Syndrome - Charisma.comFavorite Track(s):NOW / GEORGE
I found them some fucking how through tumblr this year and ever since then I’ve been praying for more than the god-sent eight tracks of absolute fucking majesty this debut album delivers. Must-have for fans of J-Rap with synth beats.
- Standard - SCANDALFavorite Track(s):恋のゲシュタルト崩壊
I used to listen to SCANDAL in passing but this year I got back into them in a big bad way with the release of this Album. Their mature image is showing more and more and while I’d like the hear Mami’s vocals more, this entire album is a fucking delight to listen to, start to finish.
- Because The Internet - Childish GambinoFavorite Track(s):II. No Exit / 3005
This album is pretty clearly experimental in a lot of respects for him, and I really respect it. He also wrote a screenplay to go along with it. The entire album is really a multi-sensory experience, but it still stands up on it’s own as just a really fucking good album.
- 黒キ渚 - 黒木渚Favorite Track(s):赤紙 / あたしの心臓あげる
So I don’t even really remember how I found her, be it through tumblr or just surfing Japanese indie labels on youtube, but this debut album from Kuroki Nagisa blew me away straight from the first song, and every song that followed for better and better. Her voice and how she plays guitar has a sort of raw, genuine emotion that I’ve found hard to find. She’s really a jewel, and her second album she released this year, Hasami, was just as good.
- sakanaction - サカナクションFavorite Track(s):Aoi / ストラクチャー
In general, Sakanaction releases can always be praised for their consistency in sound and just pure listening pleasure. This album is no exception. From start to finish the album is a mix of upbeat and mellow, each song flowing from one to the next. It was one of my all time favourite albums of the year for good reason, and is probably just flat out of my all time favourite albums in general.
- Second Story - ClariSFavorite Track(s): ルミナス
ClariS always puts out really good upbeat tracks super anime sounding tracks and this album is not an acception. Whenever I listen to their stuff I feel like I’m living in PMMM’s world and it just makes you feel important, if that makes sense. Their voices are fucking beautiful.
- Matangi - M.I.A.Favorite Track(s):Bring the Noize
This was one of my top anticipated albums of the year. I downloaded every single, posted them as they came out, and wore myself out listening to them over and over. The full album did not disappoint in the least. Start to finish it just just fucking great. The album version of Bring the Noize somehow improved upon the original- I had no idea that was possible.
- Electric Lady - Janelle MonaeFavorite Track(s):Electric Lady / Primetime
This album honestly is tied for most anticipated for the year with LEVEL3. I’ve been following Janelle for a few years now, and this album is just the besssssttttt. Her collabs on this (MOTHER FUCKING PRINCE AND ERYKAH BADU) and mind meltingly aamazing. She proves her status as a musical chameleon going from super upbeat 60s sounds, to slow R&B ballads, to empowering feminist raps. This album start to finish is an absolute experience, just like Because The Internet, and I couldn’t imagine my year without it.Honorable Mentions
